Casio F-91W-1YER Men’s Resin Digital Watchįirst up in our list of the best watches under £100 is this extremely popular Casio. Obviously, if I’ve missed a watch you believe deserves to be in this list, comment and let me know and it may make it into the next update.Īs always, don’t forget to comment at the end and let us know what you’re favourite affordable watch was from today’s list. If you want actual value for money, stay clear of designer brands. This list has taken quite some time to put together and includes a variety of designs and styles so there should be something to suit everyone. You can get a lot better watches for the same price. What they do is get a cheaper watch made and slap their brand on it, and expect people to pay a lot of money. Those might not be the most desirable names on the consumer market, but Clare-Flagg warns against going for designer watches: "They tend to offer less value for money. Clare-Flagg namechecks the likes of Seiko ("the build quality and what you get for your price is pretty incredible") and Alpha as solid options. There are plenty of good brands producing quality watches at affordable prices. That goes for analogue watches of course, because there is a whole world of digital watches out there – a topic for another time. But aside from these functions, the main difference between sports watches and regular watches is the design, with sport watches a little less formal. You may also find a chronograph (stop watch) on a sporty watch – perfect for the gym teacher. Neither of these mean you should be spending much time at that depth however, and if you need a watch for diving, you should probably go for a 300m diving watch. For example, their water resistance is far stronger – at least 100m, whereas some water-resistant watches are just 30m. ![]() Mostly, they're built on the same principles as regular watches, but have a few extras. "Usually you will see these classed as a diving watches," says Clare-Flagg. ![]() You can usually tell a hand-powered watch by the smooth, rather than ticking, second hand. Hand-powered mechanical watches have to be wound every day or two, to store energy to power the watch. Mechanical watches have no batteries, but have tiny little cogs that are either powered by hand or automatic. There are two main types of movement: mechanical and quartz (battery powered). "The movement has a lot of weight on the quality of the watch itself," says Clare-Flagg. "It can make a massive difference on whether a watch is ten quid or custom handmade in Switzerland." Movement refers to the mechanism controlling the timepiece. Again, lighter and also more susceptible to breaking. Cheaply made watches may have low-grade chrome in the body and bracelet. Better devices are made from surgical grade steel, an alloy that's tougher and more resistant to scratching. Then there's the difference in the actual body of the watch. The good news, however, is that you don't need to break the bank for a synthetic sapphire watch: "you just have to know what you're looking for," Clare-Flagg explains. And then there's acrylic glass, a form of plastic, which is even lighter and cheaper, but less durable. "They're pretty much scratch proof," says Clare-Flagg.Ĭheaper watches will use a mineral crystal, which isn't quite as strong and can scratch. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, it registers nine – that's only one level down from diamond – so synthetic sapphire is definitely sturdy. On affordable watches, there are three main types of crystal, the best of which is synthetic sapphire. "Sapphire crystal would be nice, of course, but unrealistic," says Clare-Flagg.įrequently asked questions about men's watches What makes a durable watch?Īccording to Clare-Flagg, the most important aspect is the glass – otherwise known as the crystal. The crystal is K1, which is a treated glass that has a higher scratch resistance than mineral crystal, but isn't quite as strong as sapphire. The only thing that lets it down, slightly, is the lack of sapphire crystal, which you can find on similarly priced watches. An added chronograph gives you the option for timing things. The quartz movement is made by Seiko, and the battery should last three years. ![]() It's light at just 58g it's water resistant to 30m (though you probably shouldn't expose it to more than a bit of splashing, so not too much exploration). It doesn't just look good, however it's also a very good watch for the price. ![]()
